Back in November I followed See Jane Write founder Javacia’s lead and jotted down four goals that I wanted to complete before 2013. The goals weren’t meant to be large or difficult; they were meant to encourage us to wrap up loose ends and finish the year on a good note. Here’s how mine turned out:
- Trust that things will work out When I wrote my initial post I was facing an upcoming job change and stressful trip back home—and mentally freaking out. I relaxed and let things happen as much as possible without worrying, and everything turned out just fine. The trip home had its ups and downs, but we survived in one piece. As for the job? I could not have imagined a better resolution. Believe me when I say it was epic and I came out on top. It taught me to not worry so much and to take things as they come.
- Crosstrain more While I did crosstrain a little bit the past two months, it certainly was not twice a week like I had hoped. I have started strength training and getting in my #plankaday again to work on my core. I have also started trying new classes, which I’ll highlight later in the month. Crosstraining will be a necessity for me getting ready for my 50k so that I am in good physical shape overall and can tackle the distance and toll it may take on my body.
- Reconnect with friends With the holidays coming up I wanted to make sure that I hung out with and Skyped with friends, which is just what I did! My trip to Jersey was full of brunch, lunch, and dinner dates and a lot of catching up with old friends. The past few weeks have been wonderful as well, spending time with friends who came home to Alabama for Christmas. This is something that should come naturally rather than me having to set a goal, but I will continue to remind myself until it becomes effortless and second nature.
- Finish a project Fail. This is the one goal I did not complete, and I’m really disappointed in myself. I worked on it a lot in the beginning of December, and then let it slide, again, as I started my new job and the holidays came along. So to start 2013 off on a good note and to not be disappointed in myself, I will finish this project this week. Pinky swear.
Was there anything you wanted to complete before the end of the year? Did you do it?

One of my favorite statistics is that Babe Ruth led the league five times in strikeouts, all the while setting massive records for his home runs. The idea is not to give up but keep trying to achieve your goals. Timelines are a good start, but it’s accomplishing the goals themselves that defines your character. Good job!
Curious, what does your training look like for your 50k? I’m training to run my first 50k in April, always curious to hear how others have prepped for theirs…
I’m starting to increase my mileage, but I know I need to get some rest days in and maybe cross-train in the pool so my body has time to heal properly week over week.
I have a picture of my training plan in this post: http://tanyasylvan.com/2012/12/26/tanya-sylvan-50k-ultra-runner/. It’s a hybrid of one I found online and what I think will work best for me.
I’ve been told the biggest thing is to do back-to-back long runs to practice running on tired legs. I usually do one road run and one trail run over the weekend. Other than being more tired and hungry than usual, I feel great!
I think cross training is a good idea, especially in a pool so you can rest your legs! Biking may be a good idea too.
